Best ice crusher for cocktails
The tool that makes proper crushed ice costs less than any machine on this page. The machines solve a different problem, and it is worth knowing which one you have.
By Michael W. · Published October 2026

The short answer
For cocktails, the best ice crusher is a canvas Lewis bag and a wooden mallet - the Barfly set is the one to buy. It is the cheapest option here, it is the only one that produces real crushed ice with the dry, snowy texture a julep or a swizzle needs, and because you control how long you hit it you get everything from cracked to flaked out of the same bag. The canvas matters: it wicks meltwater out through the weave, so the ice comes out dry rather than slushy, which is exactly what an electric crusher or a blender cannot do. If what you actually want is chewable ice on tap rather than crushed ice for a specific drink, buy a nugget ice maker instead - the GoveeLife Smart Nugget Ice Maker Pro at around 60 lb per day, the Frigidaire EFIC255 at around 44 lb per day, or the GE Profile Opal 2.0 at 38 lb in 24 hours. Nugget ice is soft and chewable and dilutes fast by design, which makes it right for a highball or a soda and wrong for anything served over one large rock. Those are two different purchases that get searched as one, and choosing between them is the whole decision.

The distinction
Crushed ice and nugget ice are not the same ice
Crushed ice is ice you broke. It is irregular, angular, dry if you made it in canvas, and it packs - which is why a julep cup domes above the rim and a swizzle frosts on the outside of the glass. The angular faces give enormous surface area, so it chills and dilutes very fast, and that is the point: a julep is supposed to get colder and longer as you drink it.
Nugget ice is ice that was never a cube. A nugget machine shaves a thin layer of ice off a chilled cylinder and compacts the flakes into soft pellets, which is why the texture is chewable and slightly porous. It absorbs the drink it sits in, which is the thing people love about it, and it also means it melts into the drink faster than its size suggests.
So the two solve different problems. If you want a julep, a mint smash, a swizzle or a tiki drink to be correct, you want crushed. If you want a tall soda or a highball that stays cold and pleasant to chew on afterwards, you want nugget. Clear ice vs nugget ice covers the third option, and how to make crushed ice is the method once you own the bag.
The comparison
Four routes to broken ice, on the published specifications
Output and texture, from the listings we link. Note that the bag has no daily output figure because it has no cycle - it crushes as much as you feed it, as fast as you can hit it.
| Option | Ice it makes | Output | What it needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barfly wood mallet and Lewis canvas bag | Cracked to flaked, by how long you hit it | As much as you feed it | Cubes to start with, and a surface you can hit |
| GoveeLife Smart Nugget Ice Maker Pro | Soft chewable nugget | About 60 lb per day, 3.5 lb bin | Counter space, a power outlet, reservoir fill |
| Frigidaire EFIC255 | Soft chewable nugget | About 44 lb per day, 3 lb bin | Counter space, a power outlet, reservoir fill - no plumbing |
| GE Profile Opal 2.0 Ultra | Soft chewable nugget | 38 lb in 24 hours | Counter space, a power outlet, reservoir fill |
The row that surprises people is the first one. A Lewis bag has no capacity limit and no running cost, and the only thing it asks for is cubes - which means it pairs naturally with whatever ice you already make. If you make 2-inch cubes in a directional mold, you have a crushed-ice supply already and just need the bag. Best clear ice molds is where those cubes come from.
Why we do not recommend a blender or a food processor: both produce wet slush rather than crushed ice, because the water has nowhere to go and the blade re-freezes the mass into a block. They also chip blades on hard ice. A canvas bag solves the drainage problem by being made of canvas.
Method
Getting dry, even crushed ice out of a bag
Start with ice that is not fresh out of the freezer. Ice straight from a very cold freezer is brittle and shatters into dust and shards rather than breaking into usable pieces; letting the cubes sit on the counter for two or three minutes until the surface just begins to look wet produces a much more even crush. This is called tempering and it is the single technique that separates good crushed ice from a bag of snow.
Fill the bag no more than half full, fold the open end over twice and lay it flat. Hit it with the flat face of the mallet along the length of the bag rather than hammering one spot, and work from the middle outward. Four or five firm passes gives you cracked ice for a highball; ten to fifteen gives you the fine flaked texture a julep needs. Check by feel through the canvas instead of opening it each time.
Then use it immediately or get it into the freezer. Crushed ice has an enormous amount of surface area and it will start to fuse into a block within minutes in a warm room. A pre-chilled metal bowl or an insulated bucket buys you a working window. How to store clear ice covers the storage side, and best ice buckets is the equipment.
Rinse the canvas and hang it to dry. A damp canvas bag folded into a drawer goes musty, and a musty bag taints every drink it touches afterwards - which is the main reason the Barfly bag being machine washable is worth paying attention to.
The honest answer
Who should buy a machine instead
Buy a nugget machine if your household drinks a lot of tall drinks and soda, if there are usually several people around, or if somebody in the house just likes chewing ice. Those are real reasons and the machines serve them well. The daily output figures are the thing to match to your actual use: 38 to 60 lb per day is party capacity, and a 3 to 3.5 lb bin means the machine is a continuous producer rather than a store.
Do not buy one because you want better cocktails. Nugget ice is the wrong ice for every drink served over a single large cube, which is most of the spirit-forward canon - old fashioneds, Negronis on the rock, whiskey neat with ice. For those you want slow-melting clear ice, which is a mold or a dedicated clear ice machine, not a nugget maker. Best clear ice makers and best nugget ice makers are the two categories kept deliberately separate for exactly this reason.
And know the running costs before you commit. A countertop nugget machine needs regular cleaning cycles to stay sanitary, it holds standing water in a reservoir, and it is noisy in a quiet room. How to clean an ice maker is the maintenance reality, and why are nugget ice makers expensive explains what the price is actually buying.

Barfly Wood Ice Mallet with Lewis Canvas Bag

A canvas bag and a wood mallet make better crushed ice than any blender, because the canvas wicks the meltwater away while you work.
A canvas bag of roughly 17.75 by 8.25 inches and a wooden mallet of about 13.5 inches. You control the texture entirely by how long you hit it - cracked ice for a highball, flaked for a julep - and the canvas wicks the meltwater out so the ice leaves the bag dry. The bag is machine washable, which is the detail that keeps it in use.
The specs that decide it
- Bag:
- canvas, around 17.75 x 8.25 in
- Mallet:
- wood, around 13.5 in
- Care:
- bag is machine washable
- Output:
- cracked to flaked, by how long you hit it
Who it is for
- Canvas absorbs meltwater, so the ice leaves the bag dry rather than as slush
- You control the grade - a few strikes for cracked ice, thirty seconds for a julep pack
- Nothing to break, nothing to plug in, and it stores flat in a drawer
Where it gives ground
- It is manual work, and a full julep's worth is a real minute of hitting a bag
- The bag has to dry fully between uses or it will start to smell
Skip this one if you want chewable ice on tap. That is a nugget machine, not a bag and a mallet.

The highest-output countertop nugget machine in current published testing, with app scheduling that earns its keep if you host on a timetable.
Around 60 lb per day with a 3.5 lb bin, app scheduling and a self-clean cycle. This is the machine to buy if the thing you miss is restaurant ice rather than crushed ice, and the output only makes sense when there are people in the room - for two drinks an evening you are paying for capacity you will never reach.
The specs that decide it
- Ice type:
- nugget
- Output:
- around 60 lb per day
- Bin:
- about 3.5 lb
- Control:
- app scheduling, self-clean cycle
Who it is for
- Output is high enough that the bin refills faster than guests can empty it
- Scheduling from the app means the bin is full when people arrive rather than forty minutes after
- Self-clean cycle removes the one maintenance job owners actually skip
Where it gives ground
- App-dependent features mean an account and a firmware relationship you did not ask for
- A larger footprint than the budget machines, and counter space is the real cost
Skip this one if you make two drinks an evening. The output you are paying for only exists when there are people in the room.
03 · Best mid-tier nugget machine
Frigidaire EFIC255 Countertop Nugget Ice Maker
Frigidaire · Mid tier

The machine to buy if you want chewable ice in quantity and have no interest in paying for an app to tell you about it.
Around 44 lb per day, a 3 lb bin and reservoir fill with no plumbing, which means it can live on a counter or a cart without a water line. It is the sensible middle of the nugget market. Skip it if you wanted ice for stirred drinks - nugget ice dilutes fast by design.
The specs that decide it
- Ice type:
- nugget
- Output:
- around 44 lb per day
- Bin:
- about 3 lb
- Connection:
- reservoir fill, no plumbing
Who it is for
- Output is the whole argument - this is a machine that keeps up with a party rather than one drink
- Reservoir fill means no plumbing decision and no cabinet carpentry
- No app, no account, no firmware - fewer things between you and ice
Where it gives ground
- A 3 lb bin is a buffer, not storage; it melts back into the reservoir if you walk away
- Nugget machines are the loudest category of countertop ice maker and this one is no exception
Skip this one if you wanted ice for stirred drinks. Nugget ice dilutes fast by design, which is wrong for anything served on one large rock.

The reference nugget machine, included here so you can rule it out on purpose rather than by accident.
38 lb in 24 hours of soft chewable nugget, and the machine most people mean when they say they want an ice maker. Worth stating plainly: it is the wrong tool if your reason for buying is the old fashioned, because this ice dilutes fast in a glass you drink slowly.
The specs that decide it
- Type:
- countertop nugget ice maker
- Ice:
- soft chewable nugget
- Output:
- 38 lbs in 24 hours
- Cocktail use:
- dilutes fast - wrong for a stirred drink
Who it is for
- Nugget ice is genuinely better than cubes for anything long and carbonated
- Fast first-ice time compared with clear-ice machines
- Ships with a scale-inhibiting filter and a scoop, which the cheaper machines do not
Where it gives ground
- Enormous surface area means fast dilution - the opposite of what a spirit-forward drink wants
- Not clear, and not trying to be
Skip this one if your reason for buying an ice machine is the old fashioned. This is the wrong tool and it will disappoint you in that glass.
Honest limits
What we could not verify
We found no electric countertop ice crusher that produces dry, bar-quality crushed ice, so none is recommended here. The nugget machines are included because they are what most ice-crusher searches are really looking for, not because they crush ice.
We do not run a test lab and we have not personally used every product here. Where a judgment rests on published specifications or on what owners report rather than on our own hands, we say so. Read the full method.
Questions
Related questions
- What is the best ice crusher for cocktails?
- A canvas Lewis bag and a wooden mallet - the Barfly set pairs a roughly 17.75 by 8.25 inch machine-washable canvas bag with a 13.5 inch mallet. The canvas wicks meltwater out through the weave, so the ice comes out dry, and you control the texture entirely by how long you hit it.
- Can you use a blender to crush ice for cocktails?
- You can, and it produces wet slush rather than crushed ice. The water has nowhere to drain, so the mass re-freezes into a block, and hard ice chips blender blades. A canvas bag solves the drainage problem by being made of canvas.
- Is nugget ice the same as crushed ice?
- No. Crushed ice is cube ice you broke, so it is angular, dry and it packs. Nugget ice is made by shaving a thin layer off a chilled cylinder and compacting the flakes, which makes it soft, porous and chewable. Crushed is right for juleps and swizzles; nugget is right for tall sodas.
- How much ice does a nugget ice maker produce per day?
- The machines here are listed at 38 lb in 24 hours for the GE Profile Opal 2.0, around 44 lb per day for the Frigidaire EFIC255, and around 60 lb per day for the GoveeLife Nugget Ice Maker Pro. Bins are small - 3 to 3.5 lb - so they are continuous producers rather than stores.
- Why is my crushed ice wet and slushy?
- Two usual causes. Either you crushed it in something that cannot drain, such as a bowl or a blender, or the cubes came straight out of a very cold freezer and shattered into dust. Temper the cubes on the counter for two or three minutes first and crush them in canvas.
- Do I need an electric ice crusher?
- No, and we do not recommend one for cocktail use. A mallet and a canvas bag gives you more texture control, no running cost, no counter space and no cleaning cycle, and it costs less than any machine. The case for a machine is chewable ice on demand, which is a different want.
