Best glasses for an Aperol spritz

A spritz is a volume problem before it is a style problem. Three parts prosecco, two Aperol, a splash of soda, a full charge of ice and a wheel of orange needs a bigger glass than most people own.

By Michael W. · Published October 2026

A tall glass of orange aperitif over ice

The short answer

The best glass for an Aperol spritz is a 16 oz Libbey Hobstar cooler. A spritz is built 3-2-1 - three parts prosecco, two of Aperol, a splash of soda - over a full charge of ice with an orange wheel, and that comes to more liquid plus solid than a standard 12 oz highball can hold without the orange pushing the level over the rim. Sixteen ounces at 3.25 inches across also leaves room for a proper wheel of orange rather than a thin half-moon wedged down the side. If you would rather have crystal, the Schott Zwiesel Convention longdrink at 12.5 oz is Tritan crystal in a set of six and rated for repeated dishwasher cycles, which is the right trade for a drink you make for a table of people. For outdoors, buy Duralex Picardie tumblers - 17 oz, tempered glass that Duralex publishes as 2.5 times stronger than regular glass, stackable, made in France - because a spritz is a patio drink and a patio breaks glasses. The Libbey Modern Bar Essentials highball at 12 oz in a set of six is the cheap way to stock a party, provided you accept a shorter ice column. The classic Venetian serve is a large stemmed wine glass, which we do not currently stock a recommendation for.

The arithmetic

Why 12 ounces is not quite enough

The spritz is one of the few classic drinks specified by ratio rather than by volume, which is why glass size catches people out. The standard build is three parts prosecco to two parts Aperol with a splash of soda, and in practice that is around 3 oz of prosecco, 2 oz of Aperol and an ounce of soda - roughly 6 oz of liquid before anything else goes in.

Then comes the ice, and a spritz wants a lot of it. A full charge of cubes in a tumbler displaces well over half the glass, which is the whole design of the drink: the ice keeps a low-alcohol, high-acid aperitivo cold and lengthens it slowly as you sit with it. Fill a 12 oz glass with ice and you have perhaps 5 oz of usable volume, which means you are now building a smaller drink than the ratio describes.

Finally the orange. A proper spritz garnish is a full wheel or a thick half-wheel of orange sitting in the drink, not a wedge balanced on the rim, and it displaces real volume. That is why 16 or 17 oz with a 3.25 inch mouth is the right specification and 12 oz is the compromise - the mouth width is as important as the capacity, because a narrow glass will not take a wheel at all.

Tumbler or stem? Both are correct. Venice serves spritzes in large stemmed wine glasses; most of the rest of the world serves them in a tall tumbler, and a tumbler is sturdier outdoors and easier to stack. If you want the stemmed version, a large bowl wine glass is the object to look for.

The comparison

Four glasses on capacity, material and where they live

All figures from the listings we link. The last column is the question that actually decides it - a spritz is an outdoor drink more often than not.

Libbey Modern Bar Essentials highball12 oz, 3.25 in across by 5.5 in tallPressed glass, dishwasher safeSet of 6Stocking a party on a budget

Notice that the two 12 oz glasses are both sold by the six and the two larger glasses by the four. That is not a coincidence - glassware gets sold in the quantity its use case implies, and a spritz is a drink you make several of at once. If you host, buying six of something slightly small often beats buying four of the correct size. Best glassware sets for a home bar works through that set-size decision properly.

The ice

The ice matters more here than the glass does

A spritz is mostly ice by volume, so the ice is doing most of the work on how the drink tastes twenty minutes in. Small, wet, cloudy freezer-tray ice melts fast and turns a spritz watery and flat before you finish it. Larger, denser cubes keep the ratio recognizable for much longer, which is the difference between a spritz that stays bracing and one that becomes orange soda.

That makes a spritz one of the better arguments for clear ice at home, even though it is not a spirit-forward drink. You do not need a 2-inch cube - a tall glass wants a column of medium cubes rather than one rock - but you do want ice that is cold and dense rather than frosted and hollow. How to make clear ice is the method and best clear ice molds is the equipment.

Fill the glass with ice before anything else goes in, then pour the prosecco first and the Aperol second. Pouring the sparkling wine onto ice rather than onto Aperol preserves more carbonation, and adding the Aperol afterwards lets it fall through the glass and mix itself with almost no stirring - a spritz should be stirred once with a bar spoon at most. How to stir a cocktail covers why more stirring than that costs you bubbles.

Beyond the spritz

What else these glasses do

A 16 oz cooler is a genuinely useful glass to own beyond one drink. It is the right size for a Collins, a Paloma, a long gin and tonic, an iced tea and a glass of soda water with a lot of ice - essentially everything tall. If you only buy one tall glass, buy the largest one you have room for, because a short drink in a tall glass looks fine while a long drink in a short glass does not.

The 12 to 12.5 oz glasses sit in the standard highball slot, which is the shape a Japanese-style highball or a whisky and soda is built in. That shape is the subject of its own category. Best highball glasses and highball glass size guide cover the sizing in detail, and highball vs rocks glass covers the choice between tall and short.

On material, the summary is short. Pressed glass is cheap, thick and replaceable and belongs in the roles where glasses get handled by guests. Tritan crystal is the version you can put through a dishwasher and still call crystal. Tempered glass like the Duralex is the one to take outside. Crystal vs glass drinkware is the full material argument.

Libbey's hob-and-star cut pattern on a 16 oz column: the best-looking highball you can buy for pressed-glass money.

16 oz, 3.25 inches across by 6 inches tall, sold as a set of four, in a pressed hobstar pattern from Libbey's cut-glass archive. The capacity is the reason: a 3-2-1 spritz with a full ice charge and a wheel of orange fits with headroom. The pattern is a bonus here rather than a cost, because a spritz is an opaque orange drink and there is no ice column to obscure.

The specs that decide it

Capacity:
16 oz
Dimensions:
3.25 in diameter by 6 in tall
Sold as:
set of 4
Pattern:
pressed hobstar cut, from Libbey's cut-glass archive

Who it is for

  • 16 oz is the size that takes a full ice column and still leaves headroom for soda
  • The hobstar pattern catches light the way a cut glass is supposed to, at a fraction of cut-crystal cost
  • Dishwasher safe and specified for bar and restaurant use, which is the durability claim that matters

Where it gives ground

  • Pressed pattern means a textured grip, not a cut one - under a close look it is molded
  • A patterned glass fights a drink you want to look at, which is the argument for a plain glass

Skip this one if you serve clear drinks you want seen. The pattern distorts the ice column you worked to make.

Tritan crystal longdrinks with a thick base and a break-resistant rim: the set to buy if you want crystal you are not nervous about.

12.5 oz Tritan crystal, titanium and zirconium reinforced, sold as a set of six, made in Germany and rated for repeated dishwasher cycles. This is crystal you can serve six spritzes in on a summer afternoon without wincing. Keep the ice charge to three or four cubes rather than filling to the rim and the volume works.

The specs that decide it

Capacity:
12.5 oz
Material:
Tritan crystal, titanium and zirconium reinforced
Sold as:
set of 6
Made in:
Germany
Dishwasher:
rated for repeated cycles

Who it is for

  • The only crystal in this category you can genuinely put through a dishwasher repeatedly
  • Rim and base are the reinforced parts, which is where tall glasses actually fail
  • Sold by the six, so it is a real stocking option rather than a display pair

Where it gives ground

  • Costs several times the Libbey set for a difference you feel at the lip, not in the drink
  • Plain to the point of anonymous - this is a restaurant glass, by design

Skip this one if the glass is part of the show. A cut pattern does more for a cart than Tritan does.

Tempered French glass that stacks, survives a crowded dishwasher rack and costs little enough to own eight - the everyday glass a home bar actually runs on.

17 oz, tempered glass published by Duralex as 2.5 times stronger than regular glass, stackable, made in France, sold as a set of four. A spritz lives on a terrace or beside a pool, and this is the glass that survives being set down on stone. It is deliberately plain - that is the point.

The specs that decide it

Capacity:
17 oz
Sold as:
set of 4
Glass:
tempered, published by Duralex as 2.5x stronger than regular glass
Made in:
France
Storage:
stackable

Who it is for

  • Tempered rather than annealed, which is the one material difference that shows up in a household with a dishwasher and a tile floor
  • Stacks, so eight glasses take one shelf instead of two
  • Thick rolled rim and a wide base, so it tolerates being knocked about
  • Rated for hot or cold, so the same glass does morning coffee and an evening highball

Where it gives ground

  • The rim is thick, and after a thin-rimmed crystal tumbler you feel it on every sip
  • Short and wide rather than tall, so an ice column plus a long pour fills it faster than a proper highball
  • Bistro-plain by design - it will never be the glass you hand someone to impress them

Skip this one if you want the glass to be part of the drink's presentation. This is deliberately plain equipment; buy a cut-glass highball for the moments that matter.

The sensible default: an angular 12 oz highball, heavy enough in the base to feel deliberate, cheap enough to own six.

12 oz, 3.25 inches across by 5.5 inches tall, dishwasher safe, sold as a set of six. The honest caveat is in the capacity: at 12 oz a full spritz build leaves you a short ice charge or a thin slice of orange. For six people at a barbecue, that is a reasonable trade.

The specs that decide it

Capacity:
12 oz
Dimensions:
3.25 in diameter by 5.5 in tall
Sold as:
set of 6
Dishwasher:
dishwasher safe

Who it is for

  • A set of six at pressed-glass money, which is the only honest way to stock a highball glass
  • Angular facets and a weighted base read as intentional rather than as a juice glass
  • Libbey clarity and a rim that tolerates a dishwasher rack

Where it gives ground

  • At 5.5 in it is a short highball - a long ice column plus a 2 oz pour fills it with no headroom
  • Thicker at the lip than crystal, which you notice on a sipping drink

Skip this one if you drink tall drinks slowly and want the ice column a 16 oz glass allows. Go up a size instead.

Honest limits

What we could not verify

We do not currently recommend a specific large stemmed wine glass for the classic Venetian serve - our glassware registry covers tumblers and cocktail stemware, not wine glasses. The stemmed option is described rather than picked.

We do not run a test lab and we have not personally used every product here. Where a judgment rests on published specifications or on what owners report rather than on our own hands, we say so. Read the full method.

Questions

Related questions

What glass is an Aperol spritz served in?
Traditionally a large stemmed wine glass in Italy, and a tall tumbler nearly everywhere else. Both are correct. What matters is capacity: 16 oz or more, with a mouth around 3.25 inches so a full wheel of orange fits in the drink rather than balancing on the rim.
How big should a spritz glass be?
At least 16 oz. The 3-2-1 build is roughly 6 oz of liquid, a full ice charge takes over half the glass, and an orange wheel displaces more. In a 12 oz glass you end up with either a short ice charge or a smaller drink than the ratio describes.
Can you use a wine glass for an Aperol spritz?
Yes - a large bowl wine glass is the original Venetian serve, and the wide bowl is good for the aroma of the orange. A tumbler is the practical choice outdoors, because it is sturdier, it stacks, and it does not tip on an uneven terrace table.
Does the ice matter in a spritz?
More than the glass does. A spritz is mostly ice by volume, so small cloudy freezer-tray cubes dilute it to orange soda before you finish. Dense cubes that melt slowly keep the ratio recognizable for the whole drink.
What is the order to build an Aperol spritz?
Ice first, then the prosecco, then the Aperol, then a splash of soda and the orange. Pouring sparkling wine onto ice rather than onto Aperol keeps more carbonation, and adding the Aperol second lets it fall through and mix itself with at most one stir.
Are patterned glasses bad for a spritz?
No, and this is the exception. A cut or hobstar pattern distorts the clear ice column in a drink you want to look at, but a spritz is an opaque orange drink with no column to show off, so the pattern is purely decorative gain.
