How much ice for a party

Work it out from the glass, not from a rule of thumb. The arithmetic is simple and it explains why everyone runs out at the same point in the evening.

By Michael W. · Published October 2026

Ice being scooped into glasses on a bar counter

The short answer

Plan on roughly 1 to 1.5 lb of ice per guest for a normal evening, and 2 lb per guest if it is hot, if the party runs past four hours, or if you are also chilling bottles in ice. That comes out of the glass rather than out of a tradition: a tall drink built over a full charge of ice uses around half a pound, so three drinks per guest is about a pound and a half before a single cube goes into a cooler. Chilling bottles is a separate budget again - a tub of wine or beer wants enough ice to surround the bottles, which is usually more than everyone drinks. A countertop machine is not a party solution on its own: the fastest we recommend produces around 60 lb per day with a 3.5 lb bin, which is excellent as a continuous top-up and useless as a store, so run it for a day in advance into freezer bags and treat its live output as a bonus. The two things that actually decide whether you run out are drainage and timing: ice sitting in its own meltwater welds into a block and then melts twice as fast, and a bucket refilled in small amounts all evening lasts far longer than one filled to the brim at seven.

The arithmetic

Work backwards from one glass

Ice planning goes wrong because people estimate for the party rather than for the drink. Start at the glass instead. A 12 to 16 oz tall drink built over a full charge of cubes holds roughly 8 to 10 oz of ice, which is about half a pound. A rocks drink over one large cube uses a little less. A shaken drink uses ice twice - once in the tin, which is then discarded, and again if the drink is served over fresh ice - so a shaken drink on the rocks can use three quarters of a pound on its own.

Multiply by drinks rather than by hours. Most guests have two to three drinks across a normal evening, which puts you at a pound to a pound and a half each. That is where the standard figure comes from, and knowing its derivation is what lets you adjust it: a crowd drinking tall highballs all night needs more, a crowd drinking two glasses of wine each needs almost none.

3030 to 45 lb+20 to 30 lb45 to 60 lb

The bottle-chilling column is the one that catches people out, and it is not a per-person figure at all - it is a per-container figure. A tub of bottles needs enough ice to surround them, not to sit under them, which means roughly as much ice by volume as bottles. Budget that separately and never take it out of the drinks ice.

These are planning figures derived from the volumes above, not measurements. If you have hosted the same group before, your own memory of when you ran out is better data than any table.

Making it last

Three things that double the ice you already have

Drain the meltwater. Ice sitting in water melts dramatically faster than ice sitting on a grid above it, because water transfers heat into the cubes far more efficiently than air does - and wet cubes also fuse into a single block, which you then have to break up and which melts faster once broken. A bucket with a channeled drainage base is the single most useful piece of party ice equipment there is. Best ice buckets ranks them on exactly that feature.

Refill little and often. A bucket filled to the brim at the start of the evening spends three hours melting while nobody is pouring; a bucket refilled in cup-sized amounts every half hour keeps the reserve in the freezer where it belongs. Keep the bulk in bags in the freezer and treat the bucket as a service container, not a store.

Pre-chill the glasses and the bucket. A room-temperature glass takes its first heat out of your ice, and so does a room-temperature bucket - a stainless bucket straight from a cupboard will melt a visible amount of the first fill just reaching equilibrium. Five minutes in the freezer for the bucket, and glasses chilled in advance if there is room. How to chill a cocktail glass covers the fast methods.

A fourth, if you have the freezer space: bigger cubes. A large cube has far less surface area per unit of volume than a handful of small ones, so it survives much longer in the same glass. For a party that is a trade against speed of chilling, but for spirit-forward drinks it is strictly better. Best clear ice molds is the equipment and how to make clear ice is the method.

Machines

What a countertop maker can realistically do

Read the two numbers on any countertop machine as a pair: daily output and bin size. Output of 38 to 60 lb per day sounds like party capacity, and it is - spread over 24 hours. Bin size of 3 to 3.5 lb is what is available at any given moment. A machine is therefore a tap, not a tank, and treating it as a tank is how a host ends up with an empty bucket at nine o'clock.

The way to use one for a party is to run it the day before and bag the output into the freezer, then let it keep producing during the evening as a top-up. App scheduling makes that easier, which is a genuinely practical reason to pick a machine that has it. Best nugget ice makers and best countertop ice makers compare the output figures across the category.

And match the ice type to the drinks. Nugget ice is soft and chewable and dilutes fast by design, which is right for tall sodas and highballs and wrong for anything served over a single rock. If your party is old fashioneds, buy or make clear cubes and use the machine for the mixers. Clear ice vs nugget ice covers the difference and best ice crushers covers the third texture.

If you are buying bagged ice instead, buy it as late as you reasonably can and keep it in a cooler rather than a freezer - a domestic freezer opened repeatedly all evening is worse at holding a large mass of ice than a closed insulated cooler is.

The highest-output countertop nugget machine in current published testing, with app scheduling that earns its keep if you host on a timetable.

Around 60 lb per day with a 3.5 lb bin, app scheduling and a self-clean cycle. The app scheduling is the feature that matters for hosting - start it the night before and bag the output - because the bin is small and the machine is a producer rather than a store. For two drinks an evening, this is far more capacity than you will ever reach.

The specs that decide it

Ice type:
nugget
Output:
around 60 lb per day
Bin:
about 3.5 lb
Control:
app scheduling, self-clean cycle

Who it is for

  • Output is high enough that the bin refills faster than guests can empty it
  • Scheduling from the app means the bin is full when people arrive rather than forty minutes after
  • Self-clean cycle removes the one maintenance job owners actually skip

Where it gives ground

  • App-dependent features mean an account and a firmware relationship you did not ask for
  • A larger footprint than the budget machines, and counter space is the real cost

Skip this one if you make two drinks an evening. The output you are paying for only exists when there are people in the room.

The machine to buy if you want chewable ice in quantity and have no interest in paying for an app to tell you about it.

Around 44 lb per day, a 3 lb bin and reservoir fill with no plumbing, so it can live on a counter or a cart for the evening. Enough to cover a party of eight to twelve if you start it a day ahead. Nugget ice dilutes fast by design, so it is wrong if the drinks are served over one large rock.

The specs that decide it

Ice type:
nugget
Output:
around 44 lb per day
Bin:
about 3 lb
Connection:
reservoir fill, no plumbing

Who it is for

  • Output is the whole argument - this is a machine that keeps up with a party rather than one drink
  • Reservoir fill means no plumbing decision and no cabinet carpentry
  • No app, no account, no firmware - fewer things between you and ice

Where it gives ground

  • A 3 lb bin is a buffer, not storage; it melts back into the reservoir if you walk away
  • Nugget machines are the loudest category of countertop ice maker and this one is no exception

Skip this one if you wanted ice for stirred drinks. Nugget ice dilutes fast by design, which is wrong for anything served on one large rock.

03 · The bucket that keeps ice usable

OXO Steel Ice Bucket and Tong Set

OXO · The step up

Double-wall stainless with a drainage grid in the base and a flip lid - the bucket that actually addresses why stored ice fails.

4 quarts of double-wall stainless with a channeled grid in the base that drains meltwater away from the cubes, a one-handed flip lid and tongs stored on side pegs. The grid is the feature that matters on a party night - cubes kept out of their own meltwater stay separate rather than fusing into a block.

The specs that decide it

Capacity:
4 qt
Construction:
double-wall stainless steel
Lid:
flip-top, one-handed
Base:
channeled grid that drains meltwater away from the cubes
Includes:
tongs, stored on side pegs

Who it is for

  • The drainage grid is the feature: cubes sitting in their own meltwater round off and weld together, and this lifts them clear of it
  • Double walls keep the outside condensation-free, so it can sit on a wood cart without a mat
  • Flip lid opens one-handed while your other hand holds a glass, which is the whole point of a lid

Where it gives ground

  • 4 qt is a large object to store when you are not hosting
  • Tongs on external pegs look purposeful but they drip on whatever is underneath

Skip this one if you make one drink at a time. An insulated bucket solves a hosting problem, not a drinking one.

Double-wall stainless, a lid and tongs in the box, at the price most people should pay for a bucket they use six times a year.

About 3 quarts of double-wall stainless with a lid and tongs included. Two buckets beats one big one at a party, because you can keep one in the freezer while the other is in use. Its own caveat is fair: without a raised base, 2-inch cubes will weld together over a long evening.

The specs that decide it

Capacity:
about 3 qt (2.8 L)
Construction:
double-wall stainless steel
Includes:
lid and tongs
Handle:
swing or fixed depending on version

Who it is for

  • Does the two things that matter - insulates and covers - without charging for a third
  • 3 qt is enough for a round of tall drinks and small enough to live in a cupboard
  • Stainless inside and out, so nothing to stain and nothing to absorb odor

Where it gives ground

  • No drainage grid, so cubes sit in meltwater and will fuse if you leave them long enough
  • Oggi sells several versions under similar names - check the capacity and whether tongs or a scoop is included before buying

Skip this one if you are storing 2-inch cubes for a long evening. Without a raised base they will weld into a block.

Questions

Related questions

How much ice do you need per person for a party?
About 1 to 1.5 lb per guest for a normal evening, and around 2 lb if it is hot, the party runs past four hours, or you are chilling bottles too. The figure comes from the glass: a tall drink over a full ice charge uses roughly half a pound, and most guests have two or three drinks.
How much ice for 20 people?
Roughly 20 to 30 lb for drinks service, 30 to 40 lb if it is hot or the party is long, plus about 20 lb more if you are also chilling bottles in tubs. Bottle chilling is a per-container budget, not a per-person one, so keep it separate.
Can a countertop ice maker keep up with a party?
Only as a top-up. Daily output of 38 to 60 lb is spread across 24 hours and the bins hold just 3 to 3.5 lb, so a machine is a tap rather than a tank. Run it the day before into freezer bags and let its live output supplement the store.
Why does party ice melt so fast?
Usually because it is sitting in its own meltwater. Water transfers heat into ice far more efficiently than air does, so a bucket with no drainage melts its contents much faster and fuses the cubes into a block on the way. A channeled drainage base fixes most of it.
Should I fill the ice bucket all at once?
No. A bucket filled to the brim early spends hours melting while nobody is pouring. Keep the bulk bagged in the freezer and refill the bucket in cup-sized amounts every half hour - the same quantity of ice lasts considerably longer that way.
Is bagged ice or homemade ice better for a party?
Bagged, for volume. Homemade clear ice is for the drinks you care about; bagged ice is for the drinks you are making twenty of. Buy it as late as you can and store it in a closed cooler rather than a freezer that gets opened all evening.
